Saturday Still Life

....Dying Dappled Daylight....

******************************************************
Today was a good day.
Today,
.I made rain for the hop vine
.pulled crisp radishes, perfect crimson planets
.admired the lavender
.saw a jeweled tiny green frog
.encouraged the beets
.watered the garden
.and sat down numerous times to listen
to the sst sst sst sst of the sprinker
.marveled at the sparkling sunlight of silken webs
.snipped chives and dill
.harvested crinoline lettuces
.made sun tea and kefir
.picked blueberries and worried the birds
.listened to the musical plunk
and plink of the berries
.threw corncobs to the chickens
.hung clean towels on the fence to dry
.cleaned my spinning wheel
.made fresh corn soup
.and gave thanks
that I did not throttle
my youngest grandson.
It was a good day.
.a simple day
filled with wonders.
.a dappled day
.life's devine invisibles.

best, e.

It sure sounds like a good day! A dappled day ... I can never hear that word, or read it, without immediately also hearing Gerard Manley Hopkin's poem Pied Beauty.

GLORY be to God for dappled things—
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches’ wings;
Landscape plotted and pieced—fold, fallow, and plough;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change: Praise him.

(Just in case you didn't know it, though I'm sure you did :D )

And thank you again, dear, sweet, Ellen for your too kind words at knitsofacto

I knew "dappled day" was reminding me of something ... Annie hit it on the nose. But of course you know the poem - you quoted it yourself not long ago (I think in reference to a pear?).

What a very lovely day indeed. I wish I new how to make rain. :)
