A Very Late Goodbye

to October.
Dear October,
You were the best.
If Autumn were a seasonal sandwich,
you were the goodness,
the nourishment
and the tastiness
lying between the bargain supermarket
white bread that was September
and now is November.
You were everything I wished for
and all I needed.
You were all glory
with your brilliant reds,
coppery yellows,
joyous orange
and freckle-flecked browns.
Each day was a gift,
below me, above me and around me.
Dear, dear October,
you are #1 in the Calendar of My Heart.

****************************************************

Many thanks again for all of your notes
of kindness and support.
I have learned a very important thing
through all of the worries concerning my siblings.
I have known the importance of giving
thanks for all the good in my life,
but now I understand and am determined
to practice the act of being Thankful For That Which I Can Do.
It dawned on me that we are all blessed
to be able to do the simple and most mundane
tasks that each day always brings...
the washing of dishes
the washing of clothes
the constant clean up
the running of errands
the things that are not always welcomed
or enjoyed, or even those tasks
which seem tedious and never-ending.
I am blessed because I can still do these things.
There will come a day when like my siblings,
I'll not be able to.
I'll take them on gratefully for as long as possible.
And should I forget and relapse
and turn the air blue with my language,
do remind me with a good slap!
Love and thanks,
E.

Hi Ellen, great pictures the colors are amazing, I like the pictures across the top of your blog page. I read your comment on mine, your newfie is keeping you busy, Farley is driving us nuts he is now in his "teenage" years keeps escaping into cow fields! What you wrote is nice and also very true. I feel like I want to enjoy each day and be thankful for even the little things.

WHOOPEE ... you are back among us, Ellen !! I loved your ode to October and, of course, your amazing photos. I have lost 2 of my four siblings over the past 2 years and I am the only one of the remaining three of us that can get around ... so I consider myself very blessed, as you so lovingly reminded me.

So, so glad you are back, dear one. You grace us with such beauty and sooth us with words that are like precious oil. Life is a challenge and it sounds as though you are facing it with dignity, strength and faith. Dina (causerie.typepad.com)

Amen to all that you have said! October was a poem but November has turned out to be very prosy prose. (As I write the wind is whipping round the house and rain is splattering against the windows. This has been going on all weekend.)

And thank you for the reminder to be grateful for what we can do. I've been thinking about this a lot lately, having just visited my aging father (who can still do most things for himself, though very very slowly) and my nursing-home-bound mother in law (who has lost great chunks of her mind and mostly lies there plucking at the sheets and staring at nothing). It has made me very thankful for mobility and energy and clear thinking.

I hope your November may turn from supermarket sandwich white to whole-grain artisanal, thickly sliced, crisply toasted, and well buttered. With jam. :)

they are all beautiful, but my favorites are number two with the sun glowing and revealing the yellow veins, and the one with the brown curled leaf!

Such amazing colour... all our leaves have dried and turned brown now. We are fast approaching the hot and hazy days that Perth promises every festive season. Whilst I'd like to say "booooo" I too am so very grateful for health and capabilities and family and love... phew.. feeling teary!

There really is just no point in complaining is there?
Life is such a gift and yes... what we can do for others always brings back more to us in return.

Thank you for a gorgeous, authentic post ♥♥♥

Thank you so much for reading my blog, and leaving a comment.

Ahhh yes, you are another faerie light lover. Oh yes. I love soft evening ambiance lighting.

I read back in your blog, and it seems that you have been experiencing sadness and stress, in your life. But this beautiful "Late Goodbye to Oct." sounds hopeful. I do hope you will be back to blogging now.

Your photos and words are lovely. Blogging, must have missed them.

Gentle hugs,
Tessa~
