you triggered a memory! my mother Lways made apple lie and popped on top of the pastry she added cloves
the taste went into the apples made a lovely taste added with clotted cream yummy.

I must try the clove pomander - I remember being fascinated by the idea ever since my first childhood reading of "Little House in the Big Woods", where Ma gave Aunt Eliza (or Aunt Eliza gave Ma) a large apple stuck full of cloves as a Christmas gift.
